Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EDGE iPhone App?
The EDGE iPhone application is a first-of-its-kind news reader for the LGBT community. It allows you to access the award-winning editorial content of the world's largest network of gay and lesbian web portals via your iPhone or iPod touch, utilizing the unique capabilities of these devices.

What's the difference between the iPhone App and the EDGE websites?
While the EDGE iPhone application does not (yet) permit the full range of robust features of our web network, it's the perfect solution for those who wish to stay in touch with news and entertainment information targeted to the LGBT community while you're on the go. You don't need to be connected to your web browser - or, in many cases, to any wireless services at all - to read news, view nightlife photos, and connect with your community.

Does it cost anything to use the EDGE iPhone App?
That depends. The EDGE iPhone application is free to download and use. Do note, however, that if your iPhone is not connected to a Wi-Fi connection, the EDGE iPhone application will use your phone's cellular network connection to access and download content. Please be sure to check with your carrier to be sure you will not be charged for this usage, especially if you are traveling internationally.

Subscribing to our app is required to access certain functions. Subscriptions cost $1 per month or $10 per year (honestly, what a deal!) and allow users in version 1.3 and later to enter giveaways and load archived stories.

Where do I get the EDGE iPhone App?
That one's easy - you can either browse the Apple App Store on your iPhone or iPod Touch, or you can follow this link to download it right to your computer. Please note that the EDGE iPhone App has been designed to work with devices running Version 3.0+ of the iPhone operating system. If your phone tells you that you are unable to install the EDGE iPhone App, please be sure you've upgraded to the latest version!

What is "offline" reading?
When you first load up one of the EDGE iPhone application's news channels (Top Stories, Columnists, etc.) your iPhone will "sync" with EDGE's news servers and download EDGE's recent articles. Once the sync is complete, your phone does not need to load additional information from EDGE's servers for you to read each article. This allows you to sync your iPhone or iPod Touch once, and then read lots of stories - even if your device is no longer able to access its Wi-Fi or cellular connection. You'll find this a speedy way to browse the day's news.

Be aware, however, that the initial sync may take a moment or two; where possible, we recommend using a Wi-Fi connection to sync your device. Additionally, some non-essential components will download outside of the sync, and heavy-bandwidth items such as photoalbums will always require a live connection to view.

How do I force a sync?
In many cases, the EDGE iPhone application will automatically sync when you launch, and/or when you visit a new tab (photoalbums, columnists, etc.) For a sync to complete, you'll need the app to stay open - so feel free to browse stories or stare at fun photos while your device is downloading the latest and greatest from EDGE.

If for some reason your device does not automatically sync, you can force a sync at any time by giving your iPhone or iPod touch a "shake." Merely hold it in one hand and... well... give it a yank. If you happen to be in a public venue such as the subway or at an affair of state while doing this, we advise adopting an expression of extraordinary joy as you shake your device. It won't sync any faster, but it's a lot more fun.

How long does it take to sync?
When your device downloads stories from the EDGE Network, the amount of time you'll have to wait for new stories to appear varies quite a bit. This wait time is entirely dependent on your current connection and the speed of your device. For example, newer iPhones that have access to G3 speeds will download our stories faster than those that do not. And if your device is currently connected to a Wi-Fi network, the relative speed of download will be much faster.

How do I share an article?
You can easily share articles, columns and photoalbums with your friends, colleagues, family, and/or any unsuspecting member of the Religious Right. First, open an article, photoalbum or column; then, look for the "share" button and click it. You will be offered the option of emailing the item, posting it to Facebook, or Twittering it.

Please note that you will require a Facebook account and/or a Twitter account for the latter two options. In order to enter your Twitter credentials and unlock the Twitter sharing functionality, please visit our Info screen.

Can I adjust the number of articles saved on my iPhone?
Sure. You can opt to store anywhere from one day to ten days' worth of articles on your device. To change this preference, go to your device's "Settings" area. Select "EDGE," then select "Save Stories for" - then choos the number of days, from one to ten. Older articles will be automatically removed from your device as part of the sync process.

What's with all the ads? Can I turn them off?
Our app now includes advertising; we're sorry about that, but delivering all this fabulous news to you costs money - aren't you glad someone else is footing the bill? Subscribers can opt-out of ads if they like.

My app is frozen or won't download any stories. Help!
While glitches in the EDGE App are highly unusual (excuse us while we pat ourselves on the back), occasionally iPhones or iPod Touches experienced glitches on their own which negatively impact the way our application runs (see, it's far easier to blame someone else's technology). If your EDGE App begins behaving erratically, here are a few steps you can take:

1) Soft-reset the application. Go to your device's "Settings" area and select "EDGE." Under "General Settings," select "Reset EDGE" - then move the "Reset on next start" slider to "On." Then restart the EDGE app. Note: this action will remove all article from your device's database and will force a fresh sync.

2) If #1 does not work, you may want to simply remove and reinstall the application. See "Removing the EDGE App" below for instructions.

How do I remove the EDGE iPhone application from my iPhone or iPod Touch?
You can't. Buwahahahah. Just kidding. To remove the EDGE App, press and hold the "EDGE" application icon until it begins to wiggle. Then press the "X" in the upper left-hand corner of the icon and confirm the deletion in the window that appears.

Can I send EDGE comments or feedback about the EDGE App?
Of course! We love hearing from our community - send your comments, thoughts, recommendations and other feedback to iphone@edgepublications.com.
